The Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatovic at the Steering Committee on Media and Information Society (CDMSI)

The Steering Committee on Media and Information Society held its 15th plenary meeting in Strasbourg from 27 to 30 November. The CDMSI following some textual amendments introduced during the discussion, approved the “Declaration on the manipulative capabilities of algorithmic processes” and the “Declaration on the financial sustainability of quality journalism in the digital age” for urgent transmission to the Committee of Ministers.

The CDMSI also discussed the draft deliverables that are being prepared by the two experts committees MSI-JOQ and MSI-AUT. Furthermore, in addition to preparatory work carried out in view of the conference of Ministers responsible for media and information society, to be held in Nicosia, Cyprus on 28-29 May 2020, the CDMSI addressed progress made with the Implementation Strategy for Recommendation CM/Rec(2016)4 on the Protection of Journalism and Safety of Journalists and Other Media Actors, accepted the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Media Support (IMS) as new observers to the CDMSI and held a fruitful exchange of views with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Dunja Mijatović, including on possible synergies.

The CDMSI was briefed in particular about the Commissioner for Human Rights’ work since she has taken up office, with a focus on human rights defenders and her work on the issue of safety of journalists.
