Public discussion on legal challenges for online journalists

Under the Joint Project “Reinforcing Judicial Expertise on Freedom of Expression and the Media in South-East Europe (JUFREX)” co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe, a public discussion with media actors was organised in Pristina, on 10 October 2018.

The event was well attended by a mixture of editors, journalists, reporters, legal representatives, media associations and other organizations. A range of sub-topics within the title of the discussion were covered, including the changing environment within which journalists today are doing their work, along with legal issues such as civil and criminal defamation across a range of jurisdictions, the clash between first amendment jurisprudence and the approach adopted with regard to Article 10 of the European Convention.

The discussion was led by Ms Gillian Phillips, Editorial Legal Director at The Guardian News and Media.

The participants were actively engaged and posed questions to the international expert during the Q&A session.

The views expressed therein can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Union.
