On 21 November 2022, Patrick Penninckx, Head of the Information Society Department took part in an exchange of views with the members of the PACE sub-committee on Media and Information Society during the afternoon session dedicated to “Ongoing activities, priorities and emerging issues in the field of media and information society”, organised in Vilnius, Lithuania. Mr. Penninckx informed the committee members on the Council of Europe work on freedom of expression and the articulation between standard setting, cooperation, monitoring. He further referred to recent and current activities of the CDMSI and the Media and Internet Division and elaborated on the new topics on the agenda for the current biennium and the forthcoming instruments. He mentioned in particular the phenomenon of SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits against Public Participation) and reported on the work of the Committee of Experts on Strategic Lawsuits against Public Participation (MSI-SLP). He also presented the outcomes of the Cyprus Ministerial Conference and the Campaign for the protection of journalism and safety of journalists in preparation.
