On 9 September, Inge Welbergen intervened at the first meeting of the CDADI to present past and ongoing initiatives of the CDMSI related to hate speech. Both Steering Committees will be jointly overseeing the work of a new sub-ordinate body, the Expert Committee on Combating Hate Speech (ADI/MSI-DIS). The CDMSI highly welcomes the opportunity of closely cooperating with the CDADI. Due to the complex nature of hate speech and the dramatic effects it can have on the victim, on the victim’s exercise of freedom of expression, and on the cohesion of broader society, there is a clear need for more effective and comprehensive approaches to this growing challenge. It is a unique advantage and a necessity to have freedom of expression and anti-discrimination/inclusion experts work together and develop a common legal instrument to assist member States in the difficult task of combating hate speech within a human rights framework.
