Execution Department meets with the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office

On 5 October, the Execution Department held a series of working meetings at the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine.

The meetings focused on the measures for the execution of the ECHR judgments Gongadze (safety of journalists), Kaverzin/Afanasyev/Bielousov group (investigations of ill-treatment by law enforcement officers) and Shmorgunov and Others group (human rights abuses during Maidan events).

Discussions focused on, amongst other issues, the individual measures awaited in these cases. In most of the cases, it is crucial that Ukraine undertake effective investigations into the violations of the right to life or ill-treatment suffered by the applicants. The representatives of the Execution Department and the Prosecutor General’s Office discussed about the measures the prosecution service takes to remedy the deficiencies in the investigations which were underscored by the European Court’s judgments.

The meetings also concerned the role of the Prosecutor General’s Office in the advancement in the general measures necessary to effectively investigate complaints of ill-treatment and to protect journalists from abuses linked to their professional activities.
