The European Youth Foundation is visiting projects it is supporting and run by non-governmental youth organisations.

Through the visits the Foundation expects to increase the visibility of the EYF and the Council of Europe; give feedback to the Programming Committee on Youth (more about the Committee); establish contact with youth NGOs; get to know NGOs and the work they do.

Visited projects are organised by non-governmental youth organisations (NGOs) which are registered with the Foundation and received a grant. (More information on the application process).

Back Interview on No Hate Speech

Interview on No Hate Speech

My name is Fred, I’m 21 and I am a student and I have done music for the No hate Speech Movement, I wrote the music for a flashmob that took place in Letterkenny (Ireland).

How did you hear about this activity?

I heard about this activity through my cousin Kelvin, he is one of the Youth Ambassadors already on it; and he just kept encouraging me and I was really interested because that’s something I’d like to do, to try and make a change in our communities, and he just kept encouraging me to do something about it so, this is a step.

Is it the first time you are participating in such an activity?

I’ve done different stuff up in where I come from, Letterkenny and participated in other trainings; but this is the first time I’m part of the hate speech movement.

What are you expecting from this activity?

I’m expecting to receive more knowledge on how to how to tackle touchy, sensitive matters and how to deal with them properly and how to go about counter speech properly without bashing or hating myself.

How do you feel concerned from the topic (hate speech) of this activity?

I’m concerned about hate speech because it is something that happens, I see it on a daily basis around me and I have personally got it myself being from an African background and my skin colour being dark; I’ve constantly got comments here and there and I feel that there’s no point of being quiet, something must be done about it, especially to educate people because most of them don’t know, is more about ignorance. So yes, it’s about educating more and more people.

After this training, what would you like to do with the knowledge that you will get? Do you have a special project you would like to develop?

Yes, I actually do, from the activity training that we did (a session working with manuals to develop an activity on hate speech) I have few ideas like a safe haven, as in a place where people could come and ask questions to people representing all different kind of minorities, a forum where anybody could come and ask questions, as a reference point, without being judged, that’s the key part, just wanting to get more information and more knowledge on how not to discriminate.

Is the programme of the activity meeting your expectations? Are you learning new things?

Yes, it’s really meeting my expectations and I feel even more as exceeding my expectations, as I felt like I know all kind of things but I’ve learned a lot more here now than I thought I could, so yes.

If you have a message to give to the EYF, what would you say?

I would say: keep it up! Keep trying to be the change you want to see in this world, because we need them. We can’t do this by ourselves, we do need this kind of encouragement, that funding and yes, it’s not going to waste and we will make them proud as they make us proud.
