Interview with Jami, participant of the seminar

Jami participated in the seminar “Me as sexual being”. He has been interviewed by the EYF during its visit to the activity “Let’s talk about sex” organised by the youth NGO International Falcon Movement – Socialist Educational International (IFM-SEI) between 20-26 May 2018 in Döbriach, Austria. For more information, please click here.

How did you hear about this activity?

I heard about it from my youth organisation. I was supposed to go to Barcelona, but they thought that maybe this subject would   be more suitable for me, and maybe something that I would be more interested in.

What are you expecting from this seminar?

Maybe to learn something new about myself and maybe open my mind about these things [sex identities and sex education].

Do you feel concerned from the topic of this activity, and how?

For sure. I am part of the LGBT community and I wanted to be a part of this. In Finland we don’t have that much sex education; it’s very limited. So, even though I know a lot of things about the topic, I still wanted to learn about it, hear it from another point of view and hear others’ thoughts about it as well.

After the seminar, what would you like to do with the knowledge that you will get?

I would like to maybe develop it in my country. The topic is kind of taboo in Finland, but I still think that we could educate young people there and let them know about these things; because it is not a very open subject.

Do you have any special project you would like to develop?

I don’t know for the moment, but I think that the topics of gender and sexual identities will be a very good thing to develop, because I think that a lot of people don’t have the knowledge about these things and maybe they think that something is wrong with them because they don’t know that it is so common.

If you had a message for the EYF what would it be?

I would thank it for this opportunity and I would like to let you know that you are doing good work in letting this kind of activity to come together, because it is very important for all of us.
