20 years of the revised European Social Charter: colloquium on Italy's contribution to the protection of social rights in Europe

The 20th anniversary of the revised European Social Charter occurs in a period of major challenges for the implementation of social rights in Europe. The economic crisis and the austerity measures, as well as the unemployment of young people, the influx of immigrants, the increase of xenophobic and racist incidents constitute major threats to socioeconomic rights. In order to address these issues, the Council of Europe works to consolidate and reinforce the treaty system of the European Social Charter, through the Turin process in particular, launched by its Secretary General in 2014. Italy's contribution to this process and to the establishment of a coherent and harmonized system of protection of social rights at European level was discussed at a colloquium, organised by the National Council of Research (CNR) of Italy in Rome on 3 November 2016.

Giuliano Poletti, Minister of labour and social policies of Italy, Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Michele Nicoletti, President of the Italian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and Piero Fassino, former mayor of Turin, were among the key speakers. The opening speech was pronounced by the President of the European Committee of Social Rights, Giuseppe Palmisano, behind this initiative. The Department of the European Social Charter was represented at the colloquium by Riccardo Priore, coordinator of the Turin process for the European Social Charter.
