A few months ago, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to convene a Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe on 16-17 May 2023 in Reykjavik in the framework of the Icelandic Chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers. This will be only the fourth summit in the Organisation’s 73-year history. It thus represents a crucial opportunity to ensure that the Council of Europe can respond effectively to the challenges it faces - notably the war in Ukraine - by focusing on the organisation’s core competencies: namely, the promotion and protection of human rights, the rule of law, and democracy.
In that context, the President of the European Committee of Social Rights, Aoife Nolan, has addressed a letter to Ambassador Ragnhildur Arnljótsdóttir, Permanent Representative of Iceland to the Council of Europe. In it, she underlined the fundamental importance of social rights as set out in the European Social Charter to guaranteeing democracy and rule of law in Europe and invited the Committee of Ministers to include a strong reference to the European Social Charter in the Summit outcome document.
