The Deputy Secretary General Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni opened the expert seminar "Reinforcing social rights protection in Europe to achieve greater unity and equality" at the Agora. This international event, organised by the Council of Europe under the French Presidency of the Committee of Ministers, brought together experts with different backgrounds as well as representatives of the Council of Europe, the European Commission and civil society.
The Deputy Secretary General highlighted the role of the European Social Charter in the protection of social rights in Europe. "The Charter is not the limit, but the basis of building a democratic Europe where human rights, both civil and political rights and social rights, are the bedrock. We must therefore perceive the Social Charter and its monitoring mechanisms, not as a system designed to create a straitjacket of constraints for the States, but as a motor of progress for all ", said Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni.
