The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages is the European convention for the protection and promotion of languages used by traditional minorities. Together with the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities it constitutes the Council of Europe's commitment to the protection of national minorities. The implementation of the Charter is monitored by a committee of independent experts. ECRML & Germany: Protection of Danish, North Frisian and Low German extended

On 6 January 2021, Germany notified the Council of Europe that it has accepted additional Part III undertakings under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages with regard to Danish, North Frisian and Low German in the Land Schleswig-Holstein and covering administrative documents, place names and cultural activities.

The declaration, through a process which started at the time of the 20th anniversary of the entry into force of the Charter in 2018, came into effect on 7 January 2021.

The Council of Europe encourages States Parties to regularly review their level of commitment under the Charter so as to reflect improvements in the situation of their regional or minority languages.
