At the end of 2015 the Council of Europe’s Eurimages Fund joined forces with four European festivals to establish the "Eurimages Lab Project Award" for innovative projects exploring new forms of expression, as from 2016.

This prize, amounting to €50,000, was awarded by the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the Norwegian International Film Festival Haugesund, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and the European Film Festival des Arcs within the framework of their “Works in Progress” events.

To be eligible, projects had to be mainly produced in a Eurimages member state, participate in one of the above events and show co-operation between at least two countries.

During its strategic meeting in October 2019, Eurimages Board of Management decided to suspend, as from January 2021, support for lab projets in its current form and to launch an independant study on the relevance and modalities of support for non-conventional cinematographic projects. Following a market consultation launched in September 2020, this study on the feasibility pertinence and design of a Lab Projects support programme for the Eurimages Fund has been entrusted to the structure Tatino Films (FR).

You can read the final report of this study which was presented to the Board of Management at its plenary meeting on 19 March 2021 in full or in summary.

On the basis of the conclusions of this report and the discussions of a Study Group, the Eurimages Board of Management adopted in December 2022 the creation of two New Eurimages Lab Awards: the Innovation Award for innovative and experimental projects in development and the Outreach Award to promote public awareness of innovative and experimental projects at the end of production or in post-production.

During its meeting on 29-30 June 2023 and following the call for proposals launched in March 2023, the Eurimages Board of Management approved the selection of two initiatives to present the New Eurimages Lab Awards, each consisting of one Innovation Award of €20,000 and one Outreach Award of €30,000 in 2024-2026, namely:

  • CPH:DOX (Denmark) and
  • International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) (The Netherlands).

Eurimages Lab Project Awards 2018

Monday evening, in the framework of Les Arcs Film Festival, the Eurimages Lab Project Award of €50 000 went to the project White on White by Theo Court. The jury was composed by Gaia Furrer (Head of Programing for Venice Film Festival's Giornate degli Autori), Trevor Groth (30West) and Alex Traila (Romanian representative to Eurimages).
Produced by Jose Alayon from the company El Viaje Films (ES) and co-produced by Pomme Hurlante Films (FR), Don Quijote Films (CL) and Kundschafter Films (DE), this historical drama was shot at the “end of the world”, in Tierra del Fuego, a snow- and windswept landscape. There, a photographer in search of beauty is carried away by the violence of the colonists, of which he becomes an ambiguous and voluntary witness.

12-11-2018 - On Friday evening, the jury of the Agora Works-In-Progress awarded the Eurimages Lab Project Award of an amount of
50 000 euros to the film Undergrown directed by Marta Ribeiro and produced by Joana Peralta from the company Videolotion in Portugal. The members of the Jury, among which Sofia Exarchou, film director, Lorenzo Esposito (Cinéma du Réel) and Valeska Neu (Film Boutique), decided to award this film that “surprised them by its talent, passion and humanity and its effort to change our perception of Time and Space, creating a unique and visionary style”. Further information in the press release.
The Jury of the official section of the Thessaloniki Film Festival, awarded a special mention to the film Smuggling Hendrix, by Marios Piperides, a co-production supported by Eurimages between Cyprus, Germany and Greece.
The next Eurimages Lab Project Award will be awarded in the framework of the Work-In-Progress session of the Les Arcs Film Festival on 16-17 December.

24-08-2018 - The Eurimages Lab Project Award of an amount of 50 000 euros awarded in the framework of the Works-in-Progress of New Nordic Films at the 46th International Film Festival of Norway in Haugesund went to the film Burning Man directed by Itonje Søimer Guttormsen and produced by Maria Ekerhovd (Mer Film, NO). The jury composed of Csaba Bereczki for Eurimages, Ilse Acevedo, Kalle Løchen and Marianne Slot, was seduced by “the original cinematographic exploration of the main character’s road trip whilst she confronts some extreme situations”. A special mention from the Eurimages jury went to the film Season by John Skoog, a visually stunning portrait of rural Sweden that is produced by Palme d’or winner Erik Hemmendorff. Further information on the festival’s website and in the press release.
Moreover, the Norwegian Film Critics Award went to the co-production Border (SE, DK) by Ali Abbasi, supported by Eurimages.

The next Eurimages Lab Project Award will be awarded in the framework of the Agora Works In Progress at the Thessaloniki Film Festival on 8-9 November 2018.

04-07-2018 - The first Eurimages Lab Project Award for 2018 which amounts to 50 000 euros was awarded last night to the project Normal by Adele Tulli in the framework of Karlovy Vary’s Work-In-Progress.

The Jury composed of David Kořínek, Dorien van de Pas for Eurimages and Christoph Terhechte was convinced by the pitch and the images which correspond perfectly with the introduction. This film directed and written by Adele Tulli was produced by Valeria Adilardi, Laura Romano and Luca Ricciardi. Normal meditates on the everyday constraints of gendered reality, producing a poignant reflection on a current and crucial matter. See the press release.

Last but not least, the Crystal Globe for Best Feature Film at the 53rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival went to the new Eurimages-supported film by recognised director Radu Jude, entitled I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians (RO, CZ, FR, BG). The film, made in the co-production with the Czech Republic, among others, reconstructs a ghastly incident and ingeniously updates Hannah Arendt’s incisive work on the banality of evil. Employing an uncompromising narrative form à la Godard, it demonstrates that committing brutal acts is not the only path to barbarism, for even a mere stunted conscience is enough to lead a person to it. The Grand Jury also awarded a Special Mention to two Eurimages-supported films, one for the Russian co-production film Jumpman (RU, IE, LT, FR) by Ivan Tverdovsky and one for the Slovenian co-production film History of Love (SI, NO, IT) by Sonja Prosenc.
