Measures for attaining equal participation of women and men in political life were discussed at a workshop in Tbilisi

On 5 December 2019, Georgian political party representatives and members of the Central Election Commission discussed practical steps aimed at promoting women’s political empowerment.

The workshop was opened by Cristian Urse, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, and Tamar Zhvania, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission of Georgia (CEC).

Council of Europe international experts introduced latest developments pertaining to Council of Europe acquis on gender equality and measures for providing a more balanced participation of men and women in politics. They also presented recommendations on ways to maintain gender sensitive approach while developing political party policies.

Zurab Khrikadze, Member of the Central Election Commission of Georgia and Chairperson of the CEC Gender Equality Council, presented CEC strategy and practices aiming to raise women’s political representation. Elene Rusetskaia, head of domestic CSO Women's Information Centre, spoke of the various efforts and encountered obstacles on the way to a more equal gender participation in Georgian politics.

Political party and election administration representatives jointly pondered the principles of and measures for social equality, transparent public administration, intra-party democracy, and effectiveness of women’s sections.
