Back Completion of the Pilot Project "Electoral Development Schools - 2015" implemented by the Central Election Commission of Georgia

Completion of the Pilot Project

On July 24, the first stage of the CEC pilot project "Electoral Development Schools - 2015” was completed. Tamar Zhvania, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) and commission members awarded the youth participants of the trainings with certificates.

On July 13, the CEC launched the pilot project "Electoral Development Schools – 2015”. During the two-week training 17-25 year-old youth received knowledge on election related issues, including: election systems, election administration, democratic electoral principles, elective bodies in Georgia, electoral stakeholders, transparency of elections and election accessibility, gender equality and etc. At the first stage, the Electoral Development Schools were simultaneously launched in 10 election districts – Telavi, Gurjaani, Akhaltsikhe, Marneuli, Gori, Rustavi, Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Ozurgeti and Batumi.

The trainings were conducted by the specially trained District Election Commission (DEC) members. In total 236 youth representatives participated in the training course. The participants showed great interest and motivation towards each training subject, tried to obtain comprehensive information on election related issues and were actively involved in the process to successfully complete the course.

Derived from the fact that the Electoral Development Schools caused higher interest than it was expected, the term of the pilot project was extended and the number of the training groups was increased. The second stage of the training began on July 27 in nine election districts. As a result of the increased demand, every day two groups simultaneously went through the trainings in Batumi, Kutaisi and Gori.

The project implementation will increase civil engagement and contribute to the promotion of electoral issues among youth. The Election Development Schools also aim at expansion and will cover the whole country. The project will give election administration representatives an opportunity to share their professional experience with more youth. The pilot project is implemented by the CEC and the Training Centre, in cooperation with the Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) and the International Foundation of Electoral Systems (IFES) and with the financial support of the Council of Europe’s Division of Electoral Assistance and Census and the United States Agency for International Development.
