The second Steering Committee meeting of the project “Strengthening democratic citizenship education in Albania” implemented by the Council of Europe and funded by Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), was organized online on 27 January 2021 to discuss the current status of the project activities and the way forward.
The meeting brought together the principal stakeholders, including the Deputy Minister on Pre-University Education, Ms. Nina Guga, representatives from the Swedish Embassy in Albania, representatives from the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, the Agency for Quality Assurance in Pre-university Education, the General Directorate of Pre-university Education, the Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination, the People’s Advocate, NGOs, the Council of Europe and other project beneficiaries.
Key achievements highlighted during the meeting include a comprehensive review on citizenship education, a national videoconference on Democratic Citizenship, the production of publications and the establishment of the Teachers Network. The committee also discussed the importance of tangible outcomes such as inclusiveness, gender streamlining, networking, co-operation with civil society and digital education in furthering a democratic education and culture.
Representatives of the Ministry of Education welcomed the sustainability of the contribution of the Council of Europe and invited them to take part in the development of the new Education Strategy. The Ministry also emphasised the importance of digital education in view of the current health situation.
The Steering Committee members approved the annual report for 2020 as well as the indicative workplan 2021 and expressed their strong support in continuing and adapting project activities to ensure that they are relevant and provide concrete support for lasting change for the citizens of Albania.
