Back Exhibition organised by the Permanent Representation of Armenia to the Council of Europe on the occasion of the independence and 100th anniversary of the Republic of Armenia

As delivered

Ambassador, ladies and gentlemen,

It is a pleasure to mark with you the independence and 100th anniversary of the Republic of Armenia.

Today is an occasion to take pride in your modern statehood.

But Armenian civilisation and culture have of course put down roots over many centuries.

We hear them in your language, we learn about them from your traditions, and today we can see them in the range of extraordinary pictures displayed in this exhibition.

The open expanses and dramatic mountains; the urban images of modern living; the ancient churches and architecture for which you are famed.

Remy Pierre has captured them all – and we are pleased to welcome him here today.

It is fair to say that for a small nation, Armenia packs a significant cultural punch.

From the range of cathedrals, churches and monasteries featured on the UNESCO World Heritage List through to the famous Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts – the Matenadaran – which contains one of the world’s finest collections of ancient manuscripts and books on theology, philosophy, history, medicine, literature, art and cosmography: a true depository of art, intellect and creativity.

So it should surprise no-one that Armenia has done so much within the Council of Europe to promote the culture aspects of our work.

In fact, your authorities ratified the European Cultural Convention in 1997 – several years prior to becoming a member state: a clear statement of intent about your values and the commitment that you would go on to bring to our Organisation.

On the political side, Armenia has shown willingness to undertake democratic reforms in the framework of the Constitution – and it is important to point out the way in which civil society and the media have contributed to this direction of travel.

The Council of Europe has supported you in that democratic journey and we will continue to do so.

In turn, our Organisation will continue to benefit from the political and cultural contribution that is so clearly demonstrated today.

I wish you a very happy anniversary.
