Convention 108+ Romania 17th State to ratify

Today, 9 March 2022, in the presence of the Deputy Secretary General, Mr. Bjørn Berge, Ambassador Răzvan RUSU, Permanent Representative of Romania to the Council of Europe deposited the instrument of ratification of the Amending Protocol to the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of Personal Data (CETS 223).

Romania has been Party to Convention 108 since 1 June 2002; it became today the 17th state to ratify the modernised Convention 108 (Convention 108+).

The entry into force of Convention 108+ is crucial in the digital age and many more ratifications will still be necessary for the entry into force of this fundamental Convention, which is the landmark instrument aiming at ensuring appropriate protection that an individual would seek to have in an ever-expanding digital era, in order to safeguard dignity and an intimate private sphere, and to fully enjoy the right to informational self-determination.
