On October, 21, 2019, starts the 41st International conference of data protection and privacy commissioners (ICDPPC) in Tirana, Albania.

The Council of Europe Data protection Commissioner and the Secretariat will attend the conference, both the closed and open session, gathering nearly a hundred data protection authorities. This year’s theme of the Conference is “Convergence and connectivity raising global data protection standards in the digital age”.

Jan Kleijssen, the Director of Information Society and Action Against Crime of the Council of Europe will be a panelist during the first Panel of the Open sessions starting on October 23: “Global convergence in data protection law: where are we converging and what progress are we making towards common standards?”. The panel will explore what convergence means in practice and debate the value of both further developing common standards and work on making laws interoperable.

During the conference, on October 22, the Council of Europe will host a side event on Convention 108+, titled: “The global data protection convention and you” where views on the modernised Convention will be shared.

Today, Convention 108 counts 55 Parties – African, European and Latin American countries included. The Protocol amending the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data has already been signed by 34 countries.
