New Guide: Privacy and data protection principles for ICANN related data processing

The “Privacy and data protection principles guide for ICANN related data processing”, adopted by the Committee of Convention 108 gives guidance and concrete examples of how international standards in the field of the protection of privacy and personal data could be incorporated in ICANN related data processing.

The main purpose of the Guide is to facilitate the common understanding of the key concepts and definitions regarding privacy and data protection, in a diverse environment where data are processed for ICANN purposes throughout the globe. The Guide was therefore prepared to highlight the most important issues that may arise in the use of personal data, notably the implementation of the general privacy and data protection principles (notably purpose specification, proportionality, necessity, etc.), and how to satisfy other key privacy and data protection requirements such as the need for a lawful basis for processing, transparency and other obligations of data controllers (accountability, privacy by design, privacy by default), the rights of the data subjects, and the regime applicable to transborder flows of data.

The short, yet concise, Guide recalls the main principles and highlights possible avenues for practical solutions for the benefit of on-going and future policy making processes within ICANN.
