Council of Europe Data Protection Unit invited to take part in EuroDIG

This year, the Pan-European dialogue on Internet governance (EuroDIG) is being held in Tbilisi from 5 to 6 June 2018. With the intention of contributing to the European agenda on internet governance, EuroDIG will deal with a variety of topics such as the right to privacy on the internet, the fight against cybercrime, media freedom, online human rights, algorithms, domain names, internet literacy and e-governance.

The Data Protection Unit of the Council of Europe has been invited to take part in two sessions on trans-border data flows and surveillance on the internet. Through its participation in these sessions, it will raise the awareness of the European internet governance community on the changes the recently modernised Convention 108 will bring and will highlight the Committee of Convention 108’s latest guidance on the use of personal data by police, as adopted in the Practical Guide on the use of personal data in the police sector.

During 4 days (with one day of preparatory meetings and one day dedicated to the meeting of the High Level Group on Internet Governance) more than 850 participants (among them some state dignitaries and multinational company CEOs) will discuss the most relevant topics concerning the functioning of the internet and will feed the outcome of the discussions into the shaping of the European position which is to be presented during the next Internet Governance Forum later this year in Paris.
