Interactive research and conservation project of the Retable of the High Altar of Tallinn’s St. Nicholas’ Church

Location of the initiative:

 ESTONIA

Relation to Strategy 21 Recommendations:

D8 - Protect, restore and enhance heritage, making greater use of new technologies

Brief description of the initiative:

It is a perfect example of investigating and conserving a masterpiece using the newest techniques, doing international cooperation to share knowledge between the professionals, organizing workshops for the local conservators and conservation students to pass on the findings and experiences. The process has been open for the public via a blog and an interactive web-page, see http://rode.ekm.ee/. Special educational programmes have been drawn up for kindergarten, grammar school, elementary school and secondary school levels. Besides art history, physics, chemistry and Bible study can be taught as all the interactive materials also contain background information about all the Biblical figures depicted on the retable. (The web pages in Estonian contain more information but an overview can be received from the pages in English also.)
