Second Faro Convention research workshop: “Heritage and Participatory Citizenship: cross-fertilization roads”

Following a first workshop held in Fontecchio (Italy) in 2017 on communities’ revitalisation through heritage after a disaster, this second workshop organised in Huelva (Spain) focused on the actual organisation of heritage communities to participate as effectively as possible in the overall governance of cultural heritage.

Involving academia (professors and researchers) as well as civil society (community representatives), the workshop discussed existing experiences in participatory citizenship through various aspects (such as social inclusion, tourism, ICT, regenerative economy, etc.) and explored governance models and practices that can help to achieve the Faro Convention’s values and principles.

The participants identified various actions in order to foster the dissemination of these values and principles among the population, and highlighted the importance of heritage education actions as a way of ensuring the long-term sustainability of active citizen participation in issues related to cultural heritage.
