The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe highlights the role of Cultural Routes in fostering local and regional economies

Culture and heritage have a useful role to play in regions and localities by supporting their economies, improving cooperation with their communities and inspiring better and more creative solutions to their daily problems, said in its latest adopted report the Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Within this framework, the report mentions the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme as an excellent tool for implementing these principles: “The Council of Europe Framework Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society (CETS No.199, Faro Convention), the European Heritage Strategy for the 21st century (Strategy 21), the Council of Europe Cultural Routes Programme and the European Heritage Days all provide an excellent framework. This is for advancing cultural heritage, backed up by the policies of member States within which culture and cultural heritage can be placed at the core of sustainable development strategies at local and regional levels.”

By adopting a draft Resolution, the Parliamentary Assembly invited Member States of the Council of Europe to maximize the useful contribution of culture in the State and to direct culture and heritage more effectively towards education, employment, the economy, research and innovation.
