On 28 January 2019, the Ministry of Culture of Sweden requested Observer status with the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe (EPA).

Pursuant to article 2.3 of Committee of Ministers Resolution (2013)66 confirming the establishment of the EPA, the Governing Board granted this status to Sweden for a period of one year, starting 15 February 2019.

The EPA on Cultural Routes counts today 32 member States, 3 Observer States and 33 certified Cultural Routes.

At present, there are 6 Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe crossing Sweden: the Hansa, the Viking Routes, the European Route of Cistercian Abbeys, the European Cemeteries Route, the Route of Saint Olav Ways and the European Route of Megalithic Culture.
