Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Routes: Visit to the French National Agency

On 18 and 19 October, Mr. Stefano DOMINIONI, EPA Executive Secretary and EICR Director, visited the Santiago de Compostela French National Agency in Toulouse (ACIR). He met with the President of ACIR, Mr. John PALACIN and with his Director, Mr. Nils BRUNET. It was a meeting of German and French associations to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the fields of culture, education, youth, and citizenship.

The meeting was organized by the French Ministry of Culture in the framework of “La Quinzaine Franco-Allemande” in Occitane, to promote the Franco-German friendship and bring it closer to the citizens and the territories.

Other associations represented were the Association of Friends of the Way of St. James in Germany, the “Regionalverband Saarbrucken”, and the Association of Friends of Saint-Jacques in Occitane among others.

Other events included were a meeting with the Compostela Pathways Agency to discuss future projects, a meeting between German and French Actors of Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Routes and a visit of Toulouse and its heritage sites linked to the Route, such as the Saint-Sernin Basilica, Hotel-Dieu Saint-Jacques and the Jacobins Convent.

The Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Routes were the first to be certified by the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme in 1987. Throughout the Middle Ages, Santiago de Compostela was a major destination for countless pilgrims from all over Europe. Each year, hundreds of thousands of travellers set out to make their way to Santiago de Compostela.
