Online Training Seminar for candidates applying for
the "Cultural Route of the Council of Europe" certification

Organised online on the 17th June, this training seminar provided an overview of the main characteristics of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme, serving as an essential reference for representatives of cultural routes willing to apply for the “Cultural Route of the Council of Europe” certification within the upcoming Certification Cycle 2021-2022. It addressed aspects concerning the Cultural Routes certification cycle, certification criteria and preparation of applications for certification.
The aim of the seminar was to provide candidate routes’ representatives with an exhaustive overview of the certification procedure and requirements, in order to facilitate the preparation of their applications. In addition to the online training, bilateral meetings between the Secretariat and each candidate route are being organised, in order to assess the state of development of their projects, provide advice on aspects to be improved before submission of an application, and evacuate any doubts.
The training seminar was delivered by Mr. Stefano Dominioni, Executive Secretary of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe (EPA) and Director of the European Institute of Cultural Routes (EICR), and Ms. Carolina Clark, EICR Project Manager. It consisted of four modules each 1 hour in length, outlining the evolution, history and aims of the programme, benefits of becoming a certified route, a run through of the certification criteria and the certification cycle, preparation of an application and the practical ways to implement the 5 priority fields of action, as well as the scientific, governance, management, financial and visibility dimensions. It also provided a useful basis for routes to identify which aspects of the network needed to be strengthened before the submission of an application.
Over 50 participants representing 16 candidate routes attended the training seminar. These included the Danube Route of Emperors and Kings, the European Network of Holy Week and Easter celebrations, the European Route of the Wisdom of God Monuments (Hagia Sophia), the Singing Heritage Route, the European Fairy-tale Route, Mary’s Route, Holy Places of Undivided Christianity, European Route of Roma Cultural Heritage, In the Footsteps of St Paul, the Apostle of Nations – Cultural Route, Women Writers Route, European Network of Cathedrals, Silk Routes, Le Vie di Leonardo Da Vinci, Chocolate Ways, Cultural Route of European Sport Heritage and the Francysk Skaryna Cultural Route.
In order to be eligible for certification by the Council of Europe, applicant networks will need to demonstrate compliance with the certification criteria established in Committee of Ministers Resolution CM/Res(2013)67 revising the rules for the award of the Cultural Route of the Council of Europe certification.
