Description
The Abbey of l’Escaladieu is a former Cistercian monastery founded in 1142. It became an important pilgrimage stop along the Way of St. James. Sold as a national property in 1793, only a few elements of the historical cloister can still be admired. In 1997, it became property of the Hautes-Pyrénées Department Council, which provided a long-term restoration program and developed various cultural events (www.cister.net/abbayes/fr/88/escaladieu).
