Before piloting of the revised risks and needs assessment (RNA) tool the probation officers from the central and regional bodies of the Armenian Probation Service were trained on its application for three 2-day specific skills-based training sessions.
Presentation of the main steps for piloting, expectations from the probation officers involved in piloting, as well as presentation and discussion of the developed criteria for evaluation of the RNA tool for adult and juvenile beneficiaries were in the loop of these training sessions.
At the course of training sessions, the probation officers discussed the meaning of risk and criminogenic needs, got acquainted with the peculiarities of RNA tool and learnt how to register and report through the tool. Moreover, they acquired a knowledge of the differences between the actuarial and professional-judgmental tools and the role of probation officer. The probation officers practiced their knowledge and skills through small group work and peer reviews.
The tool was revised and adjusted by CoE national and international consultants in line with the Council of Europe and other international standards. RNA tool is the main instrument used by the Armenian Probation Service to evaluate probationers and assist the decision-making in a manner that fosters rehabilitation through appropriate, targeted interventions and decreases the risk of reoffending.
The training sessions were organized in July 2021 within the framework of the project “Support the scaling-up of the probation service in Armenia” implemented by the Council of Europe and financed by the Action Plan for Armenia 2019-2022.
