Le Deuxième Protocole portant modification de la Convention reflète l'évolution de la société et ajoute trois nouvelles situations à celles prévues par le texte initial, au titre desquelles une personne pourra conserver sa nationalité d'origine. Il s'agit des migrants de la deuxième génération ; des époux de nationalités différentes et des enfants mineurs dont les parents ont une nationalité différente.
