| Summary |
The European Convention on the Promotion of a Transnational Long-Term Voluntary Service for Young People aimed at 18-25 year olds wishing to perform voluntary service abroad for periods of 3 to 12 months. This text prepares the ground for providing young volunteers in Europe with a proper legal status. It aims to settle certain problems connected with the rights and obligations of voluntary workers and of the various partners involved, as well as the sending and receiving organisations (prior information and training, social insurance cover, accommodation, leave and pocket money). The Convention takes into account existing measures and offers solutions to the problems and obstacles encountered by young people wishing to engage in voluntary service abroad. It provides for the issue of a certificate recognising the skills acquired by the volunteer through this means of informal education. |
