Congress President meets with young Ukrainian local leaders
Congress President Gudrun Mosler-Törnström met, on 7 November 2016 in Strasbourg, with a delegation of twenty young Ukrainian local leaders involved in a study visit organised in the context of the World Forum for Democracy. “We believe that a good local governance system is key to restoring people's confidence in their institutions. Engaging citizens at local level, and in particular the younger generation, is a way to anchor democratic principles in a society based on respect for human rights, and to renew the political class responsible for building such a society,” she stated. The President confirmed the Congress’ support to the Ukrainian authorities of the ongoing process of local self-government reform, as part of the implementation of the roadmap signed jointly in May 2015. She also highlighted the importance of co-operation activities in the field, in particular the project “Promoting local democracy in Ukraine”, in strengthening the capacities of local elected representatives to lead change in an inclusive manner. The twenty Ukrainian participants taking part in this study visit have all participated in seminars organised in 2016.
