Current Affairs Committee: Refugee women and children, environment and human rights, local and regional media on the agenda

The Congress Current Affairs Committee met remotely on 14 September 2022.

On the agenda was a report on " the reception of women and children refugees in Europe’s cities and regions", which follows a Congress visit to Poland in July 2022. The report examines the specific needs of women and children on the run, the role of local authorities and regions in the reception processes, as well as challenges and best practices in this regard.

Members of the Committee also approved a preliminary draft recommendation and resolution on a fundamental right to the environment, drawn up jointly with the Congress Monitoring Committee, which proposes the elaboration of an additional protocol on environmental matters to the European Charter of Local Self-Government. These texts will be debated for adoption during the 43rd Session of the Congress (25-27 October 2022).

Furthermore, the Committee discussed the terms of reference for a report on "Local and regional media as watchdogs of democracy". It also examined a proposal to draw up specific recommendations for local and regional authorities on how to be resilient and to rebuild after major crises.
