Yoomi Renström: ‘’Local and regional authorities are key actors in the organisation of migrants’ reception and integration‘’

‘’Since local and regional authorities represent the governance level closest to citizens, they are the first port of call and key actors in the organisation of migrant’s reception, and their integration into the host communities’’, stated Yoomi Renström (Sweden, SOC), Congress rapporteur on migration, in the panel debate on migration, diversity and integration organised in the framework of the Assembly of European Regions (AER) in Nijmegen, Gelderland (Netherlands), on 22 November 2018.

The panel gathered European regional policy-makers in order to look at the interrelated challenges facing regions in the areas of migration, diversity and integration, and the most effective approaches to promoting diversity and social cohesion.

The integration of migrants has become one of the most salient topics in the European political agenda.  “The Congress argues for an ‘’early’’ integration approach which can facilitate the long term inclusion of migrants into host communities” Yoomi Renström stated. She encouraged initiatives aiming at giving migrants access to basic information with regard to the host community and society, facilitating language learning, engaging them in activities, and preparing them for the labour market.

‘’Elected representatives should also play a role. They must take leadership in protecting vulnerable groups. You cannot make citizens understand the advantages of migration without having politicians who understand it themselves” she concluded.
