Rena DOUROU in the Conference on Migration and Asylum: “Over the past 20 years, the Congress has sought to address the refugee/migrant phenomenon through the lens of local democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights”

“The refugee/migrant phenomenon represents for us, Regional Governors and Mayors, a twofold challenge: on the one hand, we are providing essential services while respecting the dignity of people who arrive in our cities and regions; on the other hand, we do so while addressing two shortcomings: lack of a clear institutional framework at European and national level and lack of funding”. This was one of the key points underlined by the Regional Governor of Attica, Rena DOUROU (Greece, SOC), also speaking in her capacity as Congress Rapporteur during her opening speech at the Conference “Migration and Asylum: Towards a multi-level governance approach”, held by the Region of Attica in Brussels, on 23 April 2018.

“Over the past 20 years, the Congress has sought to address the refugee/migrant phenomenon through the lens of local democracy, rule of law, and respect for human rights” she underlined.

The Conference was organised by the Region of Attica in Brussels and the the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) and was hosted by the Committee of the Regions of the EU. It included three sessions ; namely on the recast of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS), fostering reception and integration policies towards a multi-level governance approach, and the external dimension of migration and humanitarian corridors.
