Congress President, Leendert Verbeek has made the following statement today:
“I deplore and condemn the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam in the Kherson region of Ukraine. This brutal act is another consequence of Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked aggression against Ukraine, causing disastrous humanitarian and environmental ramifications.
On behalf of the Congress, I express our solidarity with Ukrainian national, regional and local authorities as they strive to ensure safety and security of citizens and other critical infrastructure in the region.
I recall in this regard the statement adopted by the Congress at its session in March this year, in which Congress members highlighted the critical importance of holding Russia accountable for its brutal war of aggression against Ukraine. The Congress stands ready to contribute to national and international efforts to ensure this accountability.
I reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with Ukraine and reiterate our call on European cities and regions to continue mobilising and providing large-scale financial, security and humanitarian assistance to their Ukrainian counterparts.”
