Congress Governance Committee met in Várpalota, Hungary

Bringing together local and regional elected representatives and experts from the Council of Europe area, the Governance Committee of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities met on 13 June 2019 in Várpalota, Hungary.

Chaired by Mr. Robert Gruman (Romania, EPP/CCE), the Committee examined two reports on the "Fair distribution of taxes in trans-frontier areas" and on "The use of languages by local and regional authorities", presented respectively by Mr. Karl-Heinz Lambertz (Belgium, R/SOC) and by Mr. Andrew Dawson (United Kingdom, R/ECR). Both reports will be on the agenda of the 37th Congress Session.

In addition, the Committee held expert hearings on topical issues including home-sharing platforms and challenges for municipalities, the future of the municipal councilor and the development of urban-rural interplay, which will be the subject of future reports.

The Committee meeting was followed on June 14 by a conference entitled “Smart cities: democratic and inclusive cities” which focused on the use of smart-city technologies and how they are transforming cities.
