Congress and the Federation of Tunisian Municipalities discuss cooperation priorities

The President of the Chamber of Local Authorities of the Congress, Xavier Cadoret (SOC/G/PD, FR) met the President of the National Federation of Tunisian Communes (FNCT), Adnen Bouassida, during an online exchange on the priorities of cooperation between the two organisations, held on 17 November 2020.

After congratulating Mr. Bouassida on his recent election as President of the FNCT at the elective General Assembly of 26-27 September, Mr. Cadoret highlighted the considerable progress made by the Federation in its internal democratisation and legitimisation process.

Discussions between the two Presidents and their teams then focused on the actions to be implemented, within the framework of the roadmap adopted by the FNCT, to further strengthen the Federation and ensure that it establishes itself as the legitimate representative of Tunisia's 350 communes and as the government's privileged interlocutor on decentralisation issues. Xavier Cadoret stressed the importance of all these efforts that must be pursued in order to "convince the citizen that there is nothing more effective than local power and to build trust," he added.

The Congress will thus continue its support aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Federation and its Secretariat, particularly in the areas of advocacy and communication, as well as the provision of services to its members, while contributing to the establishment of a pool of experts at the service of the Federation.

This meeting is part of the South-Med Partnership programme adopted by the Congress in 2017, the purpose of which is to support territorial reforms and strengthen decentralised governance in beneficiary neighbouring countries. This programme contributes to implementing the local and regional dimension of the Council of Europe policy towards neighbouring regions, in particular the Neighbourhood Partnerships with Morocco and with Tunisia (2018-2021). The activities organised in this framework benefit from financial support by Liechtenstein, Norway and Spain.
