Council of Europe Congress and Public Defender of Georgia strengthen human rights at local level

Council of Europe Congress Secretary General, Mathieu Mori, and the Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani, emphasised the significance of local authorities in implementing human rights at the grassroots level, building upon the outcomes of the 4th Council of Europe Summit in Reykjavik.

The Public Defender expressed his intent to establish stronger ties with local authorities and expand his Office’s work in the regions. He stressed that effective decentralisation requires a human rights approach and praised the contribution of the Congress’ co-operation activities in this endeavour.

By involving local authorities, Georgia can create a comprehensive and inclusive National Strategy on Human Rights that addresses the specific needs and concerns of local communities across the country. Therefore, the Public Defender of Georgia committed to facilitate their consultation and active participation in shaping the Strategy Action Plan.

Looking ahead, Secretary General Mori expressed his intention to continue the dialogue and exchange with the Public Defender's Office within the forthcoming Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2024-2027.

This visit was organised in the framework of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2020-2023 with the financial contribution of the Austrian Development Cooperation.
