Strasbourg, 04.04.2008 - The Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, will discuss the human rights situation in Slovakia with national authorities and non governmental organisations (NGOs) during a three-day contact visit starting on Tuesday 8 April. Discussions will focus mainly on the rights of minorities, refugees and asylum seekers.

During the visit, the Commissioner will meet high-level officials, as well as the Public Defender of Rights, and will visit a Roma settlement in the outskirts of Bratislava and refugee facilities in the Eastern part of the country. Mr Hammarberg will also meet NGO representatives and is due to speak at the European conference on "Education and training of Roma children and youth. The way forward" on Tuesday 8 April.

* On 16 March 2022, the Committee of Ministers adopted a decision by which the Russian Federation ceased to be a member of the Council of Europe, after 26 years of membership.
** All reference to Kosovo, whether to the territory, institutions or population, shall be understood in full compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 (1999) and without prejudice to the status of Kosovo.
