11th May 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, known as the Istanbul Convention.
On this occasion the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau with the support of the project “Awareness-raising activities on the Istanbul Convention in the Republic of Moldova” will implement an awareness raising campaign bringing together different perspectives and experiences from a variety of actors engaged in combating violence against women and domestic violence in the Republic of Moldova.
Starting from 11th May 2021, in the framework of the German Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, an online event “Istanbul Convention 10th anniversary: Voices of practitioners working in the area of violence against women” will be organized, aiming to raise awareness on the reality of violence against women and domestic violence in the Republic of Moldova and the ways to address it, from the prevention of violence to the protection to of victims.
During the month of May 2021, the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau jointly with the national key stakeholders and practitioners will promote knowledge and understanding of the Istanbul Convention and how its ratification could benefit the Republic of Moldova.
Ten videos with the voices of authorities, decision makers, legal practitioners, experts from civil society, the private sector, the media, social media influencers, art and sport celebrities will be disseminated on social media. Brochures and infographics with the myths and facts of the convention and how the system of assistance to victims of violence against women and domestic violence will need to be improved in the Republic of Moldova after the ratification of the Convention will be published on the “10 years of the Istanbul Convention” dedicated web page.
After 10 years, it’s time to move forward in making the Istanbul Convention a well-known tool, neutralize misinformation about it and turn women's rights into a reality.
The international recognition that the Istanbul Convention has obtained and its concrete impact on national legislation and practices, as well as - what is most important - on victims, are all reasons for celebration.
