Co-operation with UNICEF: UNICEF Europe and Central Asia Regional Director, Afshan Khan, visiting the Council of Europe

To underscore the close cooperation between UNICEF and the Council of Europe, Ms Afshan Khan, UNICEF’s Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia and Special Coordinator, Refugee and Migrant Crisis in Europe, visited the Council on 21 March.

While mutual work visits and joint activities between the UNICEF Regional Office and the Council of Europe, notably its Children’s Rights Division, have been taking place on a regular basis for a number of years, Ms Khan wished to further strengthen this collaboration.

In meetings with the Deputy Secretary General, Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, and the Director of Human Dignity, Equality and Sports Values, Marja Ruotanen, Ms Khan discussed recent developments in member States in the areas of children’s rights and child protection, and explored areas of common interest with a view to mutually reinforce advocacy efforts.

Ms Khan also participated in the meeting of the Ad hoc Committee for the Rights of the Child (CAHENF), specifically on issues related to refugee and migrant children and child-rights budgeting. She held further bilateral meetings with the outgoing Human Rights Commissioner, Nils Muižnieks, and staff members of the Parliamentary Assembly to exchange views on responses to children’s rights violations in the context of migration among other areas.
