As part of the joint EU-Council of Europe project “Barnahus/Children’s house”, a field research week was held in Ljubljana Slovenia, from 15 to 18 May. Three days of focus group meetings with authorities, practitioners and management level staff took place with a de-briefing workshop on 18 May.

The aim of the field research was to explore and determine key elements of a detailed operational and financial framework for the establishment and operation of Barnahus in Slovenia as well as consider its role from the process of initial report of a suspected child abuse to trial. The field research draws on promising practices and lessons learnt at European level, especially from the Nordic countries, which have been pioneers in implementing the Barnahus response model for child sexual abuse.

Prominent Barnahus experts from Iceland, Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands met with their Slovenian peers in Ljubljana to support the process.

Barnahus is a child-friendly response model to child sexual and other forms of abuse bringing together relevant services under one roof for the coordination of criminal and child welfare investigations and provision of supporting services for child victims. The joint EU-Council of Europe project is co-financed by the Structural Reform Support Services of the European Union and the Council of Europe, and implemented by the latter in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice of Slovenia during the period of February to October 2018.
