On 29 March 2021, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Ms Marija PEJČINOVIĆ BURIĆ addressed the Lanzarote Committee at the opening of its 31st plenary meeting.

The Secretary General underscored the importance of the Lanzarote Convention in protecting children from sexual exploitation and sexual abuse noting that "international co-operation with common legal benchmarks, forms the basis of a collective and effective response. This should not be guarded by European states but opened to those countries outside our Organisation that want to take action of the sort that we have pioneered."

Ms Pejčinović Burić praised the Lanzarote Committee’s monitoring work that continued to break new ground and had been vital to highlighting the need to protect children, to sharing ideas and best practice and to ensuring children’s access to the helplines and online reporting mechanisms that are crucial in particular during the current pandemic.

The Secretary General concluded by saying that the fight against children sexual exploitation and sexual abuse remains a priority for the Council of Europe.
