European preparatory meeting for the 2021 World Congress on Justice with Children

On 29 June 2020, the Council of Europe took part in the European preparatory meeting for the 2021 World Congress on Justice with Children, organised by Terre des hommes. The relevance of the Council of Europe Guidelines for Child Friendly Justice was yet again at the centre of attention. Emphasis was given to the need to strengthen all justice systems including the civil, administrative and criminal justice systems through effective legislation and training for judicial professionals where children are also trainers. The need to support child victims of sexual violence, through mechanisms such as the Barnahus models promoted by the Council of Europe, the Council of Baltic Sea States which are a highly effective manner on supporting child victims of sexual violence was underlined. Emphasis has also been made to upholding the rights of children affected. The need to develop specific guidelines for children in particularly vulnerable situation was highlighted. The preparatory work is also likely to inform the preparation of the new Council of Europe Strategy for the Rights of the Child.
