The Council of Europe is a Safer Internet Day (SID) supporter and a close collaborator in protecting children’s rights in the digital environment.
This year’s Safer Internet Day, entitled "Create, connect and share respect: A better internet starts with you", is an invitation for everyone, children and adults, to join in and engage with others in a respectful way in order to ensure a better digital experience.
Our contribution to the celebrations of the day is to introduce our newest tools and resources, such as the revised and updated Internet Literacy Handbook which provides practical advice and tips on how to navigate securely in, and seize the opportunities of the complex online world. We also present a new guide entitled ‘Parenting in the Digital Age’, accompanied by 6 short video tutorials aiming to brief parents and carers on five online risks of a sexual nature and to provide resources and best practices to online protection of children.
We also draw attention to the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse (Lanzarote Convention) which has proved to be a very useful tool in fighting sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children online, criminalising all actions related to the exploitation of children through pornography, including the fact of knowingly accessing online child abuse material.
All SID2018 supporters are equally invited to view the online game "Through the Wild Web Woods" through which younger children can learn basic internet safety rules.
Lastly, the Council of Europe’s ‘Guide on human rights for internet users', which sets out what human rights and freedoms mean in practice in the context of the internet, including for children and young people, can also be consulted.
