Children in the Republic of Moldova taken through a journey on the rights of the child

On 19 May, the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau and the National Children’s Library “Ion Creanga” of the Republic of Moldova, jointly organised an interactive event on the rights of the child at the library premises. Approximately 50 children participated in the event to celebrate in advance the International Children’s Day in the Republic of Moldova that takes place on 1 June 2019.

Children took part in games that take them on a journey through the rights of the child. Well-known children’s book author, Claudia Partole, and book illustrator, Stela Popa Damaschin, conducted reading and painting workshops, and videos and awareness raising materials were displayed and distributed.

The Council of Europe believes that children are fully-fledged holders of human rights and not mere subjects of protection. The European Convention on Human Rights applies equally to all individuals: children thus enjoy the same protection as adults.

This year, the Council of Europe project on Protecting children from sexual exploitation and sexual abuse in the Republic of Moldova is reaching out especially to children and their families to mark both the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as well as the 70th anniversary of the Council of Europe.
