French National Day of Access to Law

The CEPEJ participates on 24 May 2023 in the French National Day of Access to Law, by holding a stand all day at the Strasbourg Judicial Court, together with many other legal actors. This day, organised by the "Conseil Départemental de l'Accès au Droit du Bas-Rhin" (CDAD 67) and opened by the President of the Court, Mr. Thierry Ghéra, aims at raising awareness of the different missions of justice, which is also an important task of the CEPEJ. This event offers the possibility to any interested person to exchange with professionals of the law: lawyers, judicial commissioners, notaries, delegates of the Defender of the Rights, conciliators of justice, mediators, associations and services of the State, in order to give to the citizens the most complete vision of the actions carried out in favour of justice and access to law in France but also in Europe. This day will also be the occasion to present the Council of Europe and its main missions, in particular those concerning justice. The CEPEJ team was also welcomed by the Secretary General of CDAD 67, Mr. Vivien Whyte, former President of the European Union of Rechtspfleger/Greffiers (EUR), observer at the CEPEJ.

IMPORTANT

Following the adoption of the Resolution CM/Res(2022)2 on the cessation of the membership of the Russian Federation to the Council of Europe, the Committee of Ministers decided, in the context of the procedure launched under Article 8 of the Statute of the Council of Europe, that the Russian Federation ceases to be a member of the Council of Europe, as from 16 March 2022.

Presentation of the CEPEJ

In setting up the European Commission for  the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) at the end of 2002, at the initiative of the European  ministers of Justice who met in London (2000), the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe wanted to establish an innovative body for improving the quality and efficiency of the European judicial systems and  strengthening the court users’ confidence in such systems.

The CEPEJ develops concrete measures and tools aimed at policy makers and judicial practitioners in order to:

  • Analyse the functioning of judicial systems and orientate public policies of justice
  • Have a better knowledge of judicial timeframes and optimize judicial time management
  • Promote the quality of the public service of justice
  • Facilitate the implementation of European standards in the field of justice
  • Support member states in their reforms on court organisations

The CEPEJ also contributes with specific expertise to debates about the functioning of the justice system in order to provide a forum for discussion and proposals and bring the users closer to their justice system. (Read more)
