The Committee of Experts on the Protection of Lawyers (CJ-AV) held its first meeting in Strasbourg, embarking on the work of a future legal instrument to strengthen the protection of the profession of lawyer and the right to practise the profession without prejudice or restraint.

The CJ-AV, working under the authority of the European Committee on Legal Co-operation (CDCJ), is composed of 15 representatives of member states, of the highest ranks of judges, prosecutors, lawyers, civil servants, researchers and other highly qualified specialists, as well as a number of participants and observers (Avocats sans Frontiers, Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe, European Bars Federation, European Association of Lawyers, European Criminal Bar Association, International Bar Association and its Human Rights Institute, International Commission of Jurists, International Association of Lawyers, “Lawyers for Lawyers” Foundation, International Observatory of Endangered Lawyers).

The Committee has two years to draw up the proposals for the future instrument. At its first meeting, the CJ-AV held an exchange of views with members and observers on the different aspects that should be covered by the future instrument and on advantages and risks of the elaboration of a binding or a non-binding legal instrument. The Committee worked under the Chairmanship of Mr Christoph Henrichs (Germany) and elected its Vice-Chair, Mr Valentyn Gvozdiy, Ukraine representative, and the current Vice-president of the Ukrainian National Bar Association.
