A delegation of seven members of the High Judicial Council of Serbia, including the President of the Supreme Court of Cassation, Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Justice, and the Judicial Academy Deputy Director undertook a study visit to judicial institutions in Spain from 19 to 21 April.

The delegation held a series of meetings with counterparts, including the General Council of the Judiciary, the Supreme Court, Constitutional Court, Provincial Court in Madrid and the Ministry of Justice. During these meetings, special focus was placed on the judicial independence and countering undue pressures. Mechanisms to counter political pressures and those coming from the media were discussed in great detail. The delegation also explored the specifics of the Spanish system of continuous education of judges and attended criminal trials.

This study visit is organised as part of the joint Council of Europe/European Union Horizontal Facility action “Strengthening Legal Guarantees for Independent and Impartial Tribunals”.
