Amendments to the Serbian Constitution in the area of the judiciary

The “Round Table on Amendments to the Serbian Constitution in the Area of the Judiciary” will gather representatives of the government, of the parliament, and of the judiciary, as well as other stakeholders such as professional associations, civil society organisations and the academia, to contribute to the ongoing debate on constitutional amendments.

The event, organised by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Serbia with the support of the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, is taking place on 18 September in Belgrade.

Ms Ana Brnabić, Prime Minister of Serbia, will open the debate; Ms Jadranka Joksimovic, Serbia’s EU Integration Minister, H.E. Mr. Andrea Orizio, Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia, Ms Hanne Juncher, Head of the Justice and Legal Co-operation Department of the Council of Europe, H.E. Mr. Sem Fabrizi, Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia will address participants during the opening session.

The Council of Europe has welcomed this initiative of the Ministry of Justice, as the need for participative public consultations, particularly with all the relevant stakeholders, has been highlighted by the Venice Commission in its 2018 Opinion on the draft amendments to the constitutional provisions on the judiciary.

The event is taking place within the framework of the on-going Action on Strengthening Legal Guarantees for Independent and Impartial Tribunals, which is funded by the European Union and Council of Europe programmatic framework “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey”.
